What´s the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is an educational method applied to everyday activities. It is a simple and practical method for improving ease and freedom of movement, balance, support and coordination. The technique teaches us how to use the appropriate amount of effort for all activities, from the more demanding, to the more simple like playing and using instruments, dancing, walking, sitting or singing. It is not a series of treatments or exercises, but rather a reeducation of the mind and body. The Alexander Technique is a method which helps a person discover a new balance in the body by releasing unnecessary tension.

SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Research has shown that the Alexander Technique can help with balance, breathing, chronic pain, and backache.

For example, a controlled trial of Alexander lessons was published in the British Medical Journal in 2008. Its main conclusion was that individual lessons in the Technique have long term benefits for patients with chronic back pain. Lessons in the Alexander Technique outperformed all control groups.

About me

Before training as an Alexander Tecnique teacher I graduated from Drama School and worked as an actor and drama teacher throughout the 90s. I had my first Alexander Technique lesson in 2001 and, after a few lessons, I felt more secure and free with my voice and movement. In the same year I moved to London to train as an Alexander Technique Teacher. I graduated from The Alexander Technique Studio in 2005 and, since then, I have taught in Madrid, where I secured an MA specialising in the Alexander Technique and performing arts, Murcia, Belfast and London. I presently teach at The Alexander Technique Studio and run my own private practice in London.
